One Way! (Ours)
"Welcome to the fight against filibuster abuse! Justice Sunday, scheduled for April 24, 2005, is a unique event designed to remind our U.S. Senators that the opportunity of public service must be fully open to people of faith. Screening potential nominees to the federal bench on the basis of their religious views and moral convictions violates the American sense of fair play."
Of course, the filibuster suits them just fine when it's for their own purposes. In a 1998 interview, Steven Schwalm of the Family Research Council (who is co-organizing today's xtians-only event with Focus on the Family) had a different view when the Clinton administration nominated James Hormel (a confirmed "faggot") for an ambassador position:
"...the Senate is a -- is not a majoritarian institution like the House of Representatives is. It is a deliberative body and it's got a number of checks and balances built into our government. This is one of those checks, in which a majority cannot just sheerly force its will, even if they have a majority of votes in some cases, that's why there are things like filibusters and other things that give minorities in the Senate some power to slow things up, to hold things up, and let things be aired properly."
However, it looks like the fundies are running into a snag with opposition from secular economic conservatives who at least worship a god that can be seen and felt. Right now, I'm running into a snag of my own trying to "register as an individual" with the FRC so they can tell me how I can hear a live stream of the whine fest. I'm not being taken anywhere when I click on the provided link, so I think they may be on to me. Balls!
There is little that rankles me more than rehearsed and aggressively enacted hypocrisy. I think we've got some more nominees for 2005's "Douchebag of the Year" Award.
