The Truth Hurts

On Feb. 15th, Bill Maher hit the nail on the head during an interview on CNN when he stated, "We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion. I do believe that. I think religion stops people from thinking. I think it justifies crazies. I think flying planes into a building was a faith-based initiative. I think religion is a neurological disorder". This generated a press release yesterday from the right-wingnut Media Research Center, whining that Maher is "offensive" and "mean-spirited". Waaahhh. O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, etc. can spout off all kinds of shit on a daily basis, but when somebody criticizes their phony religion, it's denounced as bias and persecution. And many liberals, especially the lefty Christers, back down because they would rather play nice than win. Liberal media my steaming ass--the presence of people like Maher, Al Franken and Randi Rhodes offsets only a little the constant onslaught of neocon religious right brainwashing out there.

Stop defaming my cannibalistic sacraments!!!!

The funny thing is, I read the Bible. When Jesus was questioned, he always had an answer. For those who doubted his intentions, he let his actions do his best talking. When confronted, Jesus never backed down.

The religion to which Bill Maher refers has no spiritual or moral connection to Jesus Christ. It is more the bastard, apostate offspring of the Roman Empire's politically motivated absorption and disfigurement of Jesus's legacy.

Anyway, that's just my humble opinion, and I'm not even much of a Christian.

I would like to add to Maher's comments, though. In addition to religion, I think mindless nationalism, otherwise known as chauvinism or patriotism, also plays a part in the mental illness that currently afflicts the U.S.

Remember, the Council of Nicea and Emperor Constantine had your best interests in mind when they codified your beliefs.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot: if Jesus came back today in human form, how would he be received by the ignorant, jingoistic, hate-mongering right-wing fundies who claim to be our nation's moral authority?
